A successful energy transition supports us all. Through our policy arm, Spark Northwest works to shape an energy transition that addresses priorities of low-income families, tenants, rural households, and BIPOC communities.
We build coalitions, design policies, and engage elected officials. Together with community partners and advocates, we pursue both near-term fixes and transformative solutions. Currently we are prioritizing policy solutions at the intersection of climate, affordability, and safe and healthy housing.
Top Policy Priorities for Spark Northwest
- Right to cooling for renters
Extreme heat is now one of the deadliest climate threats in the Northwest. Renters have an especially hard time accessing cooling due to prohibitive regulations and costs. We advocate for policies that help renters access affordable and efficient cooling devices that keep homes safe, cut bills, and protect the climate. - Affordable energy
Rising energy costs hit hardest for households already struggling to make ends meet. We support programs that expand utility bill assistance, prevent shut-offs, and ensure energy burden relief for low-wealth families. - Community solar in Washington
Washington’s community solar program is facing administrative and funding challenges. We are working with partners and advocates to ensure that the program keeps bringing meaningful bill savings to renters and low-income households. - Weatherization and healthy homes
Energy efficient home repairs and upgrades are critical to a Just Transition. We advocate for funding and programs that make it affordable for households to insulate, seal, and upgrade their homes—lowering bills, reducing emissions, and improving health. We also support scaling up programs to move us from weatherizing individual homes to entire communities.
Building Power Through Coalitions
Spark Northwest is proud to be a part of multiple regional coalitions and alliances, including Shift Zero, Building Resilience, Making Energy Work, and the NW Energy Coalition.Together we are powering a diverse and far-reaching movement for clean and affordable energy across the Pacific Northwest.
