Big News! The US Department of Energy awarded Spark Northwest a second Prize, this time for $200,000 to ensure that remote Tribal communities receive the resources and foundational knowledge they need to set a new course towards sustainable, sovereign energy solutions. Spark Northwest is proud to work in collaboration with Port Gamble S’Klallam and Nooksack Indian Tribes on this critical work.  

Please welcome two new team members to Spark Northwest!

After earning degrees in Psychology and Dance from Boise State University, Jonnie Pedersen worked abroad in education before moving to Seattle, where she shifted her focus to climate and sustainability. With experience in bio-based building materials, Jonnie is excited to make a meaningful impact through community-focused initiatives at Spark Northwest.

Born in the Philippines and relocated to Portland, Oregon, at the age of 9, Haya Muñoz has always had a deep passion for the outdoors. With over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector, Haya has dedicated her career to advancing equitable access. Haya is thrilled to join Spark Northwest to collaborate with communities in developing sustainable clean energy solutions. 

We are excited to see technical assistance to remote communities expanding. The Department of Energy’s ETIPP program has doubled over the past few years, pairing rural communities with clean energy technical experts to develop plans and projects. This month a new cohort of communities was announced and Spark Northwest is proud to have been selected to partner closely with each of the four communities selected in our region: Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Port Orford, Nez Perce Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

Later this month members of our team will travel to Alaska to meet with ETIPP communities from across the country.

Last week our team snuck away to Gig Harbor, where we had a terrific day learning new skills and deepening our connections. We came away feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the urgent work ahead to accelerate the transition to clean energy for frontline communities.
