When we think about building clean energy, it’s easy to think about the energy things—hard technology like solar panels, batteries, wind turbines. But for those to be possible, we need more people ready to work. Energy planning, technical support, and installation jobs make for good, family-supporting career paths. Creating more of these jobs is vital for the Just Transition—and they should be accessible for everyone.
Mia, a Spark Northwest Senior Project Manager, knows a thing or two about this. She started her career in the wind industry, when there were very few women involved. That’s why, twenty years ago, she co-founded WRISE—Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy—a nonprofit designed to offer support and recruit more women into the field. Spark Northwest has long been committed to diverse workforce development in the clean energy sector: No one should be left out from the opportunities that the Just Transition presents. Last month, with Northwest Indian College and Lummi Nation, Spark Northwest supported workshops on solar panel installation, with attendees from six regional Tribes (photo featured above).
